From trini at konsulko.com Tue Mar 2 04:47:56 2021 From: trini at konsulko.com (Tom Rini) Date: Mon, 1 Mar 2021 22:47:56 -0500 Subject: [ANN] U-Boot v2021.04-rc3 released Message-ID: <20210302034756.GQ10169@bill-the-cat> Hey all, It's release day, and here's v2021.04-rc3. There's a number of things I want to talk about now. First, we've migrated our SCM from "gitlab.denx.de" to "source.denx.de". Redirections are in place and this should be the last move. If you're using "git.denx.de", please update. If you're using "gitlab.denx.de". please update. Second, I'm opening the -next merge window today. Going forward, the first release that's about a month away from the final release is when I'm going to do this, and I'll try and make sure to word that in to the regular emails and maybe the ReleaseCycle wiki page. This gives us about a month of merge time, about a month of stabilization-only time, and about a month to pick up the newer dev items that are ready, hopefully leading to less big churn in the opening of the merge window, etc. Third, I've mentioned this in a few other threads, but I need to bring it up more widely. With v2021.04 we will have reached the point where a number of platforms have been having a build warning saying that a migration deadline has expired for two years (by the release time). The warning was printed for usually a year or more prior. I'm going to start removing these platforms, and I've already posted a few series to do so (and there's been some migrations because of it). This is also the start of a number of release cycles where it will be the case that something is going to be 2 years past migration deadline, and more boards will be removed. In terms of a changelog, git log --merges v2021.04-rc2..v2021.04-rc3 contains what I've pulled but as always, better PR messages and tags will provide better results here. I do have my reminders setup for doing -rc releases every other Monday from here on out and final release on April 5th, 2021. We use the very same setup for U-Boot as well, which has a _much_ bigger and _much_ more active community. We have regular releases every 3 months, and most releases include commits from >200 developers from >30 employers. And the CI setup for U-Boot is in no respect (number of supported architectures / processors / boards / tool chains) less challenging than what you do in Xenomai, on contrary. Not to mention the development rate - U-Boot sees > 20 commits per day in mainline. Sorry, but I don't buy your "more open and welcoming to users/contri- buters" comment. THe existing environment has proven to work fine for a FOSS community project. This mail did not make it to my inbox because it was only sent to a list i happen to read sometimes. It would have been nice to receive my own copy with me actually in "To:". Would have saved me a bit of time trying to understand what is wrong. Luckily i remembered the "New developer accounts on source.denx.de" mail from last week, where that URL seemed strange when i first read it. I am not sure. But i would be willing to give it a try. Sitting on a platform that is open to everyone means we might see "stars", "fork-relationships" etc. We might have to close issues and MRs with ever repeating ... "please use ML". But at that point you are already talking to someone who used the easy collaboration effects to drive-by/random interact. And chances are high you get them onto the ML, we see this in other projects where we keep PRs and issues enabled even though we do not "use them". > We use the very same setup for U-Boot as well, which has a _much_ > bigger and _much_ more active community. Putting it on a social coding platform (probably in addition), where people can socialize could help. In a private gitlab social interaction is pretty limited, especially with a strict bouncer rejecting people that are invited to the party ;). CI/CT needs mean a hoster is more than a storage of code, and also means that more stakeholders need access. Many public hosters give compute+storage away for free. Plus free code-coverage, style checking with commercial tools ... Good stuff. Stuff that any project can benefit from, just put a "mirror fork" on github, no offense to the main hoster ... they can stay. > Sorry, but I don't buy your "more open and welcoming to users/contri- > buters" comment. Ah okay, just DM_MMC for now, so the lpc32xx boards aren't on the block? yet. However, I am interested in preserving the olimex board (i.e. configs/mx23_olinuxino_defconfig). Fabio: your imx23-evk patch provided an excellent example for me to follow, thanks! Tom: I have the MMC conversion to DM completed and tested for the Olimex Olinuxino board. But this board is still missing DM conversions for USB and ETH. Should I go ahead and send in just the MMC conversion to save it from the immediate chopping block, or would you rather wait until I've at least had a chance to look at the USB and ETH conversions in order to send all of them together in one patch set? Once again, not a whole lot of change since last time in master, and -next has been and is still open. I just want to repeat a few things from -rc4: - We've moved from "gitlab.denx.de" (and also "git.denx.de") to "source.denx.de", please make sure to update your scripts and tools and so forth. If you send me pull requests, now is a good time to switch to url/pushurl if you haven't already. - Once v2021.04 is released I will be pushing a large number of board removals for things that will be then 2 years past their "migrate this by ... or it might be removed" date which is also around 3 years total of notice. A new notice would be that we've added a migration warning of v2022.04 for DM_I2C. This migration is largely done already and there's only a few boards that need intervention still. In terms of a changelog, git log --merges v2021.04-rc4..v2021.04-rc5 contains what I've pulled but as always, better PR messages and tags will provide better results here. I'll be merging -rc5 in to -next shortly and pushing that out as well once CI completes. This is the final -rc before release on April 5th.
