The real answer to your question is "Yes."  The FEC on 8540
should just work.  Here you can see it picking up all of
the PHYs on the MPC8540ADS board:

Net:   MOTO ENET0: PHY is Marvell 88E1011S (1410c62)
MOTO ENET1: PHY is Marvell 88E1011S (1410c62)
MOTO ENET2: PHY is Davicom DM9161E (181b881)
MOTO ENET0, MOTO ENET1, MOTO ENET2
