Yes, you may lose a few 100 kB. But you get  a  lot  of  additionally
flexibility  (like  being  able to update kernel and root file system
independently from each other). And if your system does not allow for
100 or 200 kB now when you start designing the system you have  MAJOR
problems  anyway  as  your  application  software will need MUCH more
reserve.
