mpc8349-mitx-gp is working fine for me, so it's not all of 83xx

It might be related to compiler version.  I'm using ELDK 4.1:

grant at trillian:~/hacking/u-boot$ ppc6xx ppc_6xx-gcc --version
ppc_6xx-gcc (GCC) 4.0.0 (DENX ELDK 4.1 4.0.0)
