If you consider the current code duplication and ifdef hackery to be an
API, then yes, you are right and there is no need to change anything.

Why should I?

It is not the effort to keep it alive. These old boards, while being
there, add the requirement not to be broken by any change in the tree.
This makes it impossible to make any fundamental design changes in
U-Boot, like what Sascha did in v2.
