I would also vote for that one, but...

I would also prefer the additional variable. I would propose

splashpos=x,y

where x and y could be:

l -> Left
m -> Center (not c because of clash with hex numbers)
r -> Right
number -> Exact positioning

If you don't have the time to implement this I could add this to my
patch (which also adds this to the lcd code).
