Is there any specific reason for running such an obsolete version
instead of the latest release, or even top of tree?

Also, is there any specific reason for using such an old tool chain?
GCC 4.3.x has a number of known issues on ARM...

This has been discussed many times beforee.  I wonder how you managed
not to find this in the mailing list archives when you searched these.
