A few remarks regarding above code:

1. By conversion we do use 'ret' instead of 'rel'. Is the 'rel' name
itself here important?

2. The OSF bit - why shall we return from ds3231_rtc_get() with -1 (by
convention it is an error) if this flag is set? 

3. The '-1' value does not show the real reason for the error. Maybe
some standard value (like e.g. -EINVAL, -ENODEV, -EIO) from errno.h
would be more appropriate?
