Part of the process in edk2 is:

VerifyTimeBasedPayloadAndUpdate
--> VerifyTimeBasedPayload // calculate digest and compare digest
--> AuthServiceInternalUpdateVariableWithTimeStamp
    --> VariableExLibUpdateVariable
        --> UpdateVariable // unset the APPEND_WRITE

We can align with this implementation.
