IIRC, then there is a jumper on the Kilauea to configure the USB ID pin (pull
to GND). This could be worth a try. Should be documented in the Kilauea users
manual.
And I suggest that you don't hotplug the USB stick but have it connected
before powering and booting the board.
BTW: Which board revision do you have? There have been issues with earlier
board revisions. And which Linux version are you using?
