Not needed, but doesn't hurt either.

That's OK, too.

I can only speculate that something about libtool is behaving funny
(or not so funny in your environment).
Please see attachment for a complete build log on a Fedora 9 box.
[Note that I installed in /home/user/ELDK-4.2/ as you used in the
first examples.]
