What does "uname -a" say on your system? Are you running a 64 bit
system? If yes, did you install the 32 bit lcompatibility libraries?

What do you get when running these commands:
ls -l /home/tom/eldk/bin/rpm
file /home/tom/eldk/bin/rpm
file /usr/bin/awk
?
