Wow, I double checked the mail headers, but this mail is from this
century ;)
No seriously, linux 2.4 is really not what should be used on 5200er
systems nowadays and U-Boot 1.1.6 is from 2nd November 2006. From where
exactly do you get the idea that those versions are "latest versions"?
Moreover if you need USB, we strongly recommend not to use linux 2.4
anyway as the USB stack in the kernel was re-implemented for 2.6 and
works a lot besser nowadays.
Note however that when you change to a current 2.6 kernel, you will need
to at least be aware of the arch=ppc -> arch=powerpc change. A document
on our ftp server[1] gives a short intro here.

Well, in general USB is a major source of headaches, but in this
specific instance the age of the used software may explain a lot.
