Everything looks fine until here.

I have no explanation what's going on here.  Is there anychance that
your root file system has somehow not been correctly installed, and/or
corrupted?  If nothing else helps, try reinstalling it.

Also, check if there are any error messages logged in
/opt/eldk/ppc_74xx/var/log/messages

I'm using an older kernel, but otherwise a similar setup here, and it
works just fine:
