sf anon cvs is still hopelessly screwed up; this is a known problem,
sf is arbitrarily closing connections depending on load:

The tarball is insufficient because it is just an export of the 
latest, and does not contain cvs metadata (i.e. insufficient
to do cvs diffs, logs, exports from other tags, etc)...

We have enough b/w here that i can offer rsync/pserver access to a
mirror of your actual cvs tree....

But in general sf.net is, urm, charlie foxtrot.
