It did, and more. Actually it downlaoded the complete repository,  i.
e. *all* existing versions.

You already did.

It's /usr/share/doc/git-core-<version>", for example
/usr/share/doc/git-core-1.4.2.1/core-tutorial.html
/usr/share/doc/git-core-1.4.2.1/tutorial.html
/usr/share/doc/git-core-1.4.2.1/tutorial-2.html

Try "git checkout".
