So the options are:
1. Make the user hand-edit the board config file,
2. Duplicate the board config file, or
3. Put up with a little clutter in the makefile until a better system is 
put into place -- and hopefully the clutter will serve as encouragement 
for this to actually happen. :-)

I'm not sure which of #1 or #2 you're advocating, but I much prefer #3.
