The syntax of the linker scriopts has not changed. They get processed
by the linker, and despite certaing updates in recent versions the
general format has always been the same.

This has nothing to do with linker script syntax. Please note that in
current versions of U-Boot the linker scripts get pre-processed by the
C preprocessor, which is where such #defines might get processed.
