It seems we cannot rename the SPL to spl.bin as this would cause
breakage to i.MX8MM boards that do not use binman, such as
verdin-imx8mm_defconfig.

Agreed.

Let me try to send a proposal for imx8mm-evk first. If it gets
accepted, then I can try to make a common approach.
