[ELDK] Binutils 2.17 an issue for 2.6.26 kernel?

I have been following a thread on the linuxppc-dev mailing list: [HOW]
binutils-2.17 breaks the 2.6.26 kernel.

I noticed that EKDL-4.2 uses a variant of binutils-2.17.  I personally
have not had any problems with this (using kernel 2.6.25.4), but I am
now curious:  Does ELDK already contain a patch for this issue, or
should I upgrade to binutils-2.18?

I'm not sure how best to build binutils-2.18.  There are a number of
binutil patches in the ELDK crosstool, and presumably some of them might
or might not be applicable to binutils-2.18.  Does anyone have
experience with building binutils-2.18 for use in ELDK?
