[U-Boot-Users] booting over firewire/1394

One thing that might be of interest is recent work on the Darbat  
project (see http://www.ertos.nicta.com.au/software/darbat) who have  
been using a 1394 driver to boot L4/Darwin on the Intel macs via  
firewire. The source for it is up there, so you might be able to make  
use of it.
