this looks like real good stuff ... and much better than your previous attempt 
for mingw support :)

even if the mingw pieces dont get merged, i certainly think all the others 
should

any patch i didnt comment on specifically means i agreed with it and would add 
my Acked-By tag ... otherwise, very minor things and then i'd ack it
