Obviously it does not help for compile time errors.

Indeed there are people who rarely ever use a debugger; instead they
use printf() or even plain LEDs (or other GPIOs) for debugging.

feel free to chose any method you feel comfortable with.

Fact is, that a good debugger like GDB is a powerful tool for the
experienced user that can save _lots_ of time.
