I see some other issues related to different behavior on Ubuntu and the
reason was always due to the fact that Ubuntu sets dash instead of bash
as default shell (/bin/sh -> dash).
In debian, /bin/sh points always to bash, and this could be the
difference. Probably it is worth to set up the link to bash and try
again ;).
